Principle of MBR Flat Sheet Membrane

MBR flat sheet membrane, which consists of membrane modules (ultrafiltration membranes or microfiltration membranes), is a new efficient wastewater treatment and reuse process that combines the high-efficiency separation technology of membranes with the biodegradation function. It replaces secondary settling tanks, where all suspended solids and colloids are retained by membrane separation. The membrane separation effect increases the concentration of activated sludge in the aeration tank, speeds up the biodegradation process, and reduces the discharge of residual sludge.

Advantages of MBR Flat Sheet Membrane

  • Small footprint and space-saving: The MBR process can significantly increase the sludge concentration (biological bacteria population) in the activated sludge tank. Additionally, since secondary settling tanks are not needed, it can greatly save on land area.

  • Stable output water quality and high transparency: The MBR membrane can retain almost all microorganisms, especially those that are difficult to settle and proliferate slowly. As a result, the biodiversity within the system is greatly enriched, and the acclimatization and proliferation process of the activated sludge is significantly shortened, enhancing the treatment depth and the system's ability to withstand impacts, thereby stabilizing output water quality.

  • Easy operation and maintenance: Traditional aerobic activated sludge treatment processes can suffer from sludge bulking under high sludge load conditions, leading to system malfunctions and non-compliance output water. In contrast, the MBR process separates the sludge and water through membrane suction, making it less affected by sludge bulking. Consequently, it is very convenient to manage, highly automated, and easy to maintain.

  • Long sludge age: Membrane separation ensures that large, difficult-to-degrade components in the wastewater have sufficient retention time within the limited space of the bioreactor, significantly improving the degradation efficiency of refractory organics. The reactor operates under high volumetric load, low sludge load, and long sludge age, resulting in very low residual sludge discharge. The long sludge age is also more conducive to the growth of microorganisms with long generation times, aiding in the removal of hard-to-degrade organic substances in wastewater.

  • Strong shock resistance: When the quantity of incoming water changes significantly in a short time, the membrane's flow rate can be temporarily increased to mitigate the impact. When the quality of incoming water changes, the high sludge concentration can help alleviate the impact within a certain range.

Applications of MBR Flat Sheet Membrane

As an advanced wastewater treatment technology, the MBR flat sheet membrane has a wide range of applications. It combines the advantages of bioreactors and membrane filters, effectively removing suspended solids, organic matter, and microorganisms from wastewater, thereby improving water quality. In domestic sewage treatment, MBR flat sheet membranes are widely used in urban sewage, building sewage, and other scenarios, helping to improve people's living environments. Additionally, in fields such as pharmaceuticals, brewing, aquaculture, and slaughterhouse wastewater treatment, the MBR flat sheet membrane has demonstrated its high processing capacity. Furthermore, the MBR flat sheet membrane also offers benefits like reduced land area and improved output water quality, making it an important technology for future wastewater treatment and water resource recovery.
